Brazilian percussionist extraordinaire, Rubens Bassini was born in Rio in 1933 and died in 1985. Bassini played all kinds of percussion, especially bongos, conga and pandeiro and recorded on many albums of the late 50s and early 60s, including the 1959 João Gilberto bossa nova classic Chega de Saudade. He brought “Latin” rhythms and instruments (especially Afro-Cuban rhythms) into Brazilian music. He was one of the original members of Os Ipanemas, and was a hugely in-demand sideman, accompanying João Gilberto, Eumir Deodato, Edu Lobo, Stan Getz, Tom Jobim and many more. He was a key member of Sergio Mendes’ group. His own albums became collectors’ items: Ritmo Fantástico (1960) and Latino Fantástico (1963). // REVIEWS
